Based on Brother’s price and yield figures for consumables (toner and drum), the HL-L2370DW’s running costs are 3.5 cents per page, which is typical for a low-cost mono laser and the same as the Canon ImageClass LBP151dw. At 3.3 cents per page, the Dell e310 has slightly lower operating costs.
Simple And Compact
For a low-cost mono laser, the matte-black and gray HL-L2370DW is appropriately small. It weighs 15.9 pounds and has dimensions of 7.2 by 14 by 14.2 inches (HWD). Finding a place for it on your desk should not be too difficult. A one-line monochrome display and a small set of function buttons on top of the printer make setup and upkeep easier. The display is to the left of the output tray.
Paper handling on the HL-L2370DW is standard for color lasers in its price range. A 250-sheet main tray and a 1-sheet multipurpose feeder are included. The ability to print on both sides of a sheet of paper automatically is a standard feature. The text-only (Word) portion of our business applications suite was printed by the HL-L2370DW at a 33 page-per-minute (ppm) rate, just under its 36 ppm rated speed. It printed the entire suite at an average speed of 14.4ppm, which also included PowerPoint, Excel, and PDF files. We can’t directly compare its speed with the Dell E310dw or Canon LBP151dw, which were tested using our previous protocol, but the LBP151dw is rated at 28ppm for simplex (one-sided) printing while the E310dw is rated at 27ppm.
Great Text, Good Graphics
According to our testing, the HL-L2370DW has a strong overall output quality. It features top-notch text, above-average graphics, and slightly mediocre photo quality. Any business use of text should be fine, with the possible exception of those that call for extremely small fonts.
Even PowerPoint handouts intended for important clients can make use of graphics that are generally sufficient for business purposes. It rendered thin lines accurately as well. Although a gradient between various shades was barely perceptible in one figure, it generally handled similar shadings in graphs and tables converted from color illustrations well. The banding that is frequently present in backgrounds printed on laser printers was almost completely absent from our test printouts.
A significant amount of dithering (graininess) and a loss of detail in some bright areas were present in some prints of photographs. The HL-L2370DW can print out recognizable images from web pages, which is about what you can expect from typical low-cost mono lasers.
